10 Ways to Boost Thyroid Function and Balance Hormones

Healthy Thyroid and Balanced Hormones play a vital role in every woman’s health and well-being. When hormone levels fluctuate, it affects your mood, sexual desire, fertility and ovulation. In other words, the imbalance of hormones may impact negatively on how your reproductive system responds.

To help you balance your hormones and improve thyroid function, we are going to discuss Healing Foods, Environmental Issues, Herbs and exercises like Yoga and Qigong.

Mushrooms and Green Tea

Mushrooms are also one of the best foods for thyroid because of their high content of iodine, Vitamin D and selenium. Selenium balances the hormones in your thyroid.

Evidence suggests mushrooms act by blocking production of the hormone estrogen, which can encourage the development of cancer.

“As a species, we`re on a fast track to extinction,” says Ori Hofmekler, author of The Anti-Estrogenic Diet.
“In the past few decades, men have lost 50% of their sperm count and within only one generation, the average man’s sperm count and testosterone have dropped by 20%. Women are no better. Staggering figures show that most women today are suffering from female disorders and three out of ten women between the ages of 35 to 60 will develop breast cancer.”

Scientists have discovered that women consuming at least a third of an ounce of fresh mushrooms every day were 64 percent less likely to develop breast cancer. Dried mushrooms had a slightly less protective effect, reducing the risk by around half.

The study also showed women who combined a mushroom diet with regular consumption of green tea saw an even greater benefit. The risk among women in that group was reduced by almost 90 percent.

Laboratory tests on animals have shown that mushrooms have anti-tumor properties, and can stimulate the immune systems defenses.

Xenoestrogenic Chemicals and Overburdened Liver:
Most conventional food products and modern lifestyle habits are estrogenic in nature. The over reliance on highly processed, chemically-laden industry based goods and products seems to be the major culprit. Xenoestrogens are artificially made compounds produced by industry. These differ chemically from archiestrogens (naturally occurring) produced by living organisms.

Xenoestrogens mimic the effects of true estrogen and interact with cellular receptor sites. This process contributes to estrogen excess and blocks the effects of true estrogen.

The excessive bombardment of artificial hormones taxes the liver, which desperately tries to break down the excess to effectively eliminate it from the body.

Over time, the hormone eventually is stored in fat cells. Chronic liver stress causes severe problems with toxicity, digestion, metabolism, and inflammation among other things. The symptoms of this include high cholesterol, lowered energy and immunity.

Poor liver function causes an inadequate breakdown of older hormones, allowing these back into the bloodstream in an even more toxic form than when they originally entered the liver. The toxic form of estrogen dramatically increases the risk for breast cancer, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, cervical dysplasia, prostate issues, menopause, andropause (male menopause) and thyroid disorders.

Estrogenic Foods and Environmental Sources:

Certain foods are full of estrogenic molecules and chemicals. These include conventional meat and dairy which is loaded with hormones and anti-biotics and the animals were fed a diet rich in estrogenic grains. Soy isoflavinoids are highly estrogenic as are sugars, additives, preservatives and processed foods and beverages. Grains and beer (fermented barley) are highly estrogenic as well.

Major environmental sources of estrogenic substances include plastics and canned goods. Personal care products, oral contraceptives, pharmaceuticals, Styrofoam products, pesticides and herbicides are highly estrogenic. Be sure to avoid typical laundry and dishwashing detergents and household cleaners and air fresheners which are all loaded with estrogenic chemicals.

Anti-Estrogenic Food:

There are many great foods that help the body detoxify estrogen. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower Brussel sprouts and cabbage contain several powerful nutrients that detoxify bad estrogenic molecules. These nutrients include Indole-3 Acetate, Indole-3 Carbonyl and Diindolylmethane. These cruciferous veggies also contain sulfur containing nutrients such as Sulfuraphane and Phenyl Isothiocyanates that enhance liver detoxification processes and destroy cancer cell formation.

Anti-inflammatory foods that are rich in saturated and omega-3 fatty acids such as 100% organic, grass-fed beef and dairy, organic poultry, wild-caught Salmon and wild game are anti-estrogenic. Plant based fats such as avocados, coconut oil and olive oil are all powerful anti-estrogenic superfoods. Raw nuts and seeds such as almonds, pecans, walnuts, chia and hemp seeds are rich in anti-estrogenic plant sterols.

Anti-Estrogenic Herbs:

Onions, garlic and scallions are rich in sulfur containing amino acids and the powerful anti-oxidant quercetin that both help the liver detoxify at a higher level and reduce the production of estrogen. Herbs such as oregano, thyme, rosemary, sage and turmeric are loaded with volatile oils that promote liver detoxification.

Turmeric has a potent ability to destroy estrogen receptor positive cancer cells which are the most commonly found cells in breast, uterine, ovarian and prostate cancer.
Using organic acids is an advanced strategy for liver and gut health that enhances the bodies ability to remove these unwanted estrogenic molecules. Squeeze fresh lemon, which is rich in citric acid, in water and on salads, veggies, meats and other dishes. Apple Cider Vinegar contains acetic acid, fermented raw dairy from grass-fed cows contains lactic acid. There are other products that contain fermented super herbs in an organic acid base that are extraordinarily powerful for enhancing detoxification processes and neutralizing bad estrogen metabolites.

Qigong for Strengthening the Kidneys

In Chinese Medicine, as in reality, there is no way to separate the mind and the body.

The most pronounced emotion related to Kidney Deficiency is fear. This type of imbalance would be marked with unfounded fear and anxiety during everyday life rather than fear relating to true danger.

Unchecked, it can manifest as infertility, sexual dysfunction, menopause, prostate problems, impaired immunity, chronic inflammation, high blood pressure, heart irregularities and anxiety.

Adrenal glands sit on top of the kidneys and produce adrenaline that participates in the body’s fight/flight/freeze response and cortisol that stimulates stress. Long-term adrenaline and cortisol over production, partly brought on by chronic fear, can lead to adrenal burnout and chronic fatigue.

The kidney meridian starts at the underside center of the foot. It moves to the inside of the foot and circles the ankle. Then it moves up the inside of each leg, through the groin, and up the center of the torso about an inch fr…

Zhan Zhuang - Foundation of Internal Martial Arts

I found another good article on my favorite topic.

Zhan Zhuang - foundation of Internal Martial Artsby Karel Koskuba

Most Internal Martial Arts use some form of standing practice as foundation training (and Taijiquan is no exception in this regard).

These standing exercises are usually called Zhan Zhuang(pole standing); sometimes they are called 'Standing Qigong'.

The standing exercises are supposed torelax and help you'accumulate Qi'. In this article I shall try to outline my theory that should explain, from western perspective, why these exercises are so important both for Internal Martial Arts and Qigong, how this western view correlates with the traditional Qiview and give training advice on how to practice them. In writing this article I have drawn upon my experience from Taijiquan, Yiquan and information from medical postural rehabilitation research and sports science.

Qigong for Clearing the Lungs, Throat and Sinuses

This technique is a Qigong prescription for a particular set of symptoms. The White Butterfly helps heal problems associated with the Lungs, such as a cold, sinus congestion, asthma, weak breathing etc. If you have active symptoms, perform this prescription several times a day. You will probably begin to notice improvement right away. Many people, for instance, report much clearing of blocked sinuses very quickly. I call it the White Butterfly because your palms have the shape of a butterfly in this prescription, and white is the Five Element color associated with both the Lungs and Large Intestine meridians.
I am also including Golden Light Meditation for healing at the end of this Post.

The Points and Meridians

You will be using 3 important acupoints on each Hand: Lung 10, Large Intestine 4, and Pericardium 4. Pericardium 4 is usually called the Laogong point. It is in the center of the palm.

The Posture

You can do this standing or sitting. It also works very well lying down. In fact,…
